ObesityHelp Inc., aka ObesityHelp.com; Irvine, CA. [Early Stage Company] — This company was a start-up non-profit company with a mission to serve the needs of those suffering from excess weight, obesity, morbid obesity, and the co-morbidities and medical afflictions such conditions bring. At the time Mr. Jastrebski joined the company as a consultant advisor to the CEO, the company was operating at negative cash flow and had few sales. Its primary mode of operation was social network based, supported by outreach programs and seminars. Mr. Jastrebski was brought in as interim COO to develop a sustainable plan of growth that would see it able to increase the support it provided to those in need, while at the same time achieving financial stability.
Upon review it quickly became apparent that the company was donation dependent, as it had no means to generate recurring revenue. Mr. Jastrebski developed a solution involving offering online advertising to doctors and hospitals seeking gastric bypass patients, advertising that would be funded via a doctor’s resident hospital. This undertaking was coupled with another where he caused the company to partner with board certified physicians (including 16 world recognized physicians, surgeons, clinicians, psychologists, and nutritionists) who were experts in the field of morbid obesity, to offer outreach education on these topics to the public. The relationship with the physicians was then leveraged to increase advertising from the hospital and medical associations where the doctors involved maintained “privileges.” Finally, all of this was underwritten with an effort to increase the number of subscribing members (i.e. those suffering from obesity) from 250,000 to 1.3 million.
In the end, the combined efforts created a web-based commercially driven company where revenue was earned from those being served as well as those doing the serving, yet was spent for non-profit services to those in need. By the time he left, the company was the largest association of its type in the world and had achieved market dominance: 4 out of 5 morbidly obese patients across the U.S. had interacted with the company in some way, 2 out of 5 found or researched their surgeon on ObesityHelp.com prior to their initial contact; with 1 out of 9 indicating that if it were not for ObesityHelp they would not have had surgery at all or would not have done so that year. Traffic wise, the company’s website (in reality a sophisticated social network platform) managed in excess of 2.0 million unique “page hits” a day and enjoyed a growth rate of 400% annually.
